Listening is often an overlooked aspect of communication. Many of us focus on getting our point across, but Scripture frequently reminds believers of the importance of listening. Proverbs 12:15 tells us that those who listen to counsel are wise. Jesus often said, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear," and James instructs us to "be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger" (James 1:19).

In Luke 8:18, after sharing the parable of the four soils, Jesus emphasizes the significance of listening, particularly in verse 15, where He notes that the good soil represents those who hear the word with an honest heart, hold it fast, and bear fruit with perseverance. Jesus then encourages His followers to be mindful of how they listen, showing that listening affects enlightenment. It’s not merely a matter of the ears but of the heart.

When we listen with a receptive and obedient heart, God reveals more to us.

So, how should we listen?

1. Listen to Understand
This requires humility and a willingness to withhold judgment and seek clarity. Rather than shutting down when we hear something we disagree with, listening to understand ensures better communication and shows we value others' words.

2. Listen to Obey
We must hear the Word of God with a readiness to act, recognizing that it calls us to action, especially with the Judgment in mind.

3. Listen to Correct
We should approach God's Word as a mirror for self-examination, focusing on correcting ourselves, not others (James 1:22-25).

4. Listen to Minister
By hearing others' concerns and sharing relevant biblical insights, we not only minister to them but also grow in our own knowledge and application of the Word.
